Magnitude 6 quake jolts Northern Luzon

MANILA, Philippines—A strong magnitude 6 earthquake shook northern Luzon Friday evening, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

The quake, which struck at 7:33 p.m., was centered 42 kilometers southeast of Uyugan town, in Batanes province at a depth of 183 kilometers, Phivolcs said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualty from the tremor.

It was felt at Intensity IV in Uyugan; Intensity III in Laoag City, Ivana and Sabtang, Batanes; Intensity II in Burgos, Ilocos Sur, Basco and Mahatao, Batanes and Intensity I in Itbayat.

Phivolcs warned that aftershocks could occur.

The Philippines sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where continental plates collide causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
