The late fictionist, poet and literary critic Francisco Arcellana was born 97 years ago today (September 6) in Sta. Cruz, Manila. He was named National Artist for Literature in 1990. One of the forerunners of the modern Filipino short story in English, he led its development as a lyrical prose-poetic form. He published his first story, “The Man Who Would Be Poe,” while still in high school. Some of his works have been translated into different languages like Italian, German and Russian.
