USPF shocks defending champ USC

THE DEFENDING champions University of San Carlos (USC) Lady Warriors fell victim to the upset axe as they were shocked by the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Lady Panthers in a thrilling five setter during the opening playdate of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) women’s volleyball tournament last Monday at the Aznar Coliseum.

Though the Lady Warriors put up more of a fight than their male counterparts USC Spiking Warriors, who lost in straight sets to a highly-motivated University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Spiking Jaguars earlier, it still wasn’t enough as the gloomy Monday for USC’s collegiate volleyball program got capped off with a heartbreaking 25-22, 27-25, 19-25, 25-20, 13-15 loss to the Lady Panthers.

In the nightcap, the Southwestern University (SWU) Lady Cobras kickstarted their bid to return to the throne with a bang, annihilating the University of Cebu (UC) Lady Webmasters, 25-13, 25-10, 25-20.

SWU is itching to return to glory after seeing its dynasty halted by USC in the finals last season.

The volleyball action continues today with a double-header in the men’s division. The University of the Visayas Spiking Lancers and the USPF Spiking Panthers make their season debuts today when they face one another at 5:30 pm.
