Cebu’s 888 News Forum marked its seventh year yesterday by awarding two organizations and an individual for their outstanding contributions to the community.
Dr. Wyben Briones was recognized for leading the fight against dengue using organophosphate larvicide.
The campaign has succeeded in ridding communities of the mosquito-borne disease and is set to be expanded in Central Visayas.
The Movement for a Livable Cebu, represented by Mark Canton, was awarded for “raising public awareness about sustainable development, renewable materials and green technologies in pursuit of making Cebu a livable city.”
The Cebu City Dance Sport Team lead by couple Edward and Eleanor Hayco was awarded for promoting dancesport in the grassroots with free workshops in Cebu city ‘s 80 barangays over the last 14 years, as well as bringing honor to Cebu by winning over 700 medals in competitions here and abroad.
The 888 News Forum board of trustees, led by chairman Consul Bobby Joseph, handed out trophies at a luncheon award ceremony at the Marco Polo Plaza where the news forum is held every Tuesday hosted by Ricky Poca and Malou Guanzon Apalisok with Elias Baquero as coordinator.
The forum was conceived seven years ago to discuss tourism concerns but has since evolved to be a weekly venue tackling current events from politics to business and other issues that affect Cebu. /Correspondent Michelle Joy L. Padaghag
