Cops await good news from Aquino at anniversary rites Tuesday

MANILA, Philippines—President Benigno Aquino III is set to lead the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) 112th anniversary on Tuesday in Camp Crame, Quezon City, a police official said Monday.

Under the theme “Serbisyong Makatotohanan, Handog ng Pulisya sa Ating Pamayanan, ” Police Senior Superintendent Reuben Theodore Sindac, PNP-Public Information Office chief, said the event is in commemoration of the joint founding anniversaries of the Insular Constabulary established in 1901 and the Integrated National Police, organized in 1975, both forerunner organizations of the PNP.

With Aquino as guest of honor and keynote speaker, Sindac said the President is expected to make pronouncements on major policies related to national peace and order, as well as reforms and modernization of the PNP following the release of the P2.86-billion outlay by the Department of Budget and Management for the 2013 PNP Capability Enhancement Program.

Sindac said awards to PNP units and personnel would also be presented by the President.

Among the awardees is Police Chief Superintendent Marcelo Garbo Jr., National Capital Region Police Office regional director, who will receive a Plaque of Recognition for his outstanding achievement in the field of Police Administration.

Sindac said Garbo was cited for introducing policing innovation initiatives during his tour of duty in Police Regional Office 7 (PRO7) primarily by developing individual capabilities of personnel through 45 unit training programs for 8,425 personnel, and achievement of 100% computer literacy in PRO7.

Garbo was also able to establish 40 Tourist Assistance Centers throughout the region.

Police Officer 2 Webster Liwag of Malolos City Police Station, on the other hand, will receive a similar Plaque of Recognition for his outstanding achievements in the field of Police Operations.

Sindac said Liwag is cited for his role in interdiction operations against key personalities affiliated with the Dominguez Group operating in Bulacan, including the arrest Ryan Dominguez and the confiscation of high-powered firearms that were believed to have been used in the murder of a state witness.

Unit awardees are, meanwhile, the following:

-Police Regional Office 9 for outstanding achievements in the campaign against terrorism, regional level;

-Highway Patrol Group, for outstanding achievements in the campaign against organized crime, NSU level;

-and Agusan del Sur Police Provincial Office, for outstanding achievements in the campaign against organized crime, provincial level

Special Awards will also be awarded to:

-Batangas Police Provincial Office for recording the most number of firearms accounted during the May 2013 midterm elections;

-Ilocos Sur-Regional Special Operations Task Group for recording the least number of violent incidents during the May 2013 midterm elections;
