DZIQ: Former senator eyes ombudsman post

A former senator expresses willingness to be the next Ombudsman after Merceditas Gutierrez resigned, the lawmaker himself was quoted as saying over Radyo Inquirer Tuesday.

MANILA, Philippines— A former senator expressed willingness to be the next Ombudsman after Merceditas Gutierrez resigned, the lawmaker himself was quoted as saying over Radyo Inquirer Tuesday.

Wigberto “Bobby” E. Tañada was reacting to reports that he was one of three being considered by President Benigno Aquino III for the position.

Tañada was quoted as saying that being an ombudsman would be a big challenge but added that he hasn’t been asked.

Gutierrez announced her resignation last week ahead of her impeachment trial for alleged neglect of duty, among others, in pursuing graft cases filed against her former boss and president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and husband, Jose Miguel.

Her reqignation becomes effective on Friday, May 6.
