Cebu City’s roads are not in good shape.
Of the almost one thousand kilometer road network in the city, only 29 percent can be considered in good condition, the Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW) reported yesterday.
The rest of the city’s roads or 79 percent are either in bad or fair shape.
And City Hall needs to spend P1.6 billion for road improvements and maintenance in the next three years.
According to DEPW chief Kenneth Carmelita Enriquez, this will be spent for farm-to-market roads, concreting and asphalting of unpaved roads.
On the issue of increasing dilapidated roads, the DEPW said they will continue maintenance works to do patching works. Ongoing road concreting with drainage system in mountain barangays to increase connectivity from farm to market and opening of new roads are seen to address unpaved roads in the mountain barangays.
The DEPW is also set to implement one-side vending in all sidewalks to provide more walkways for the pedestrians.
“In line with Mayor Michael Rama’s vision, we also have projects for mountain barangay roads connecting province roads,” said Enriquez.
The city’s road network which is 992,387.11 kilometers are classified into City Road, National Road and Uncategorized roads.
Road safety and comfort, and improved connectivity and mobility are the general objectives of the DEPW, said Enriquez.
