6 NPA rebels, militiaman killed in Agusan del Sur attack

MANILA, Philippines—Six New People’s Army members and a militiaman were reportedly killed as the communist rebels attacked a detachment of the Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit (Cafgu) in Agusan del Sur Friday morning, the military said.

Major Leo Bongosia, spokesman of the Army’s 4th Infantry Division, said an estimated 40 NPA guerrillas stormed the militia detachment in Banag-Banag village in Sibagat town at around 5 a.m.

Government troops  and two MG520 attack helicopters were sent to chase the rebels.

Bongosia said there were about 48 militias inside the detachment when the attack happened.

“The Cafgu members defended the detachment from waves of NPA attackers,” he said, adding the casualty on the rebel side could be more.
