A trisikad for collecting garbage may be the next big thing in congested areas.

A “trashsikad” made by five third-year mechanical engineering students from the University of San Carlos promotes clean air and is a cheap way to transport garbage.

The tricycle fitted with a plastic container is one of the inventions showcased in the 2011 Central Visayas Regional Invention Contests and Exhibits organized by the Department of Science and Technology.

It was developed by Junver Libor, Joseph Joel Guardiario, James Fornis, Klintt Bernas and Joshue Arenas.

Other inventions presented were a mobile restroom on a bicycle, a medicine for gall bladder stones sourced from the internal organs of tilapia fish and multiple fired steam boilers.

Engineer Jesselito Baring, president of the Visayas Inventors Association said there should be a clamor for more invention exhibits so that more inventors can participate.

He said the pool of inventors in Central Visayas is thriving since they “produce materials that will sell and can be used by the market.”

The inventions are on display in Ayala Center Cebu until Aug. 19

Awards will be handed out for outstanding utility model, outstanding industrial design, outstanding creative research and outstanding student creative research.
