Chief Insp. Renier Raotraot, chief of police here, said Lemuel Modesto, 35, and Nelson Caballero were unarmed when fired at Thursday as they were passing by Barangay (village) Malawanit around 3:10 p.m. for Barangay Bacungan, where they were stationed as members of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit under the 72nd Infantry Battalion.
Raotraot said investigation showed that the communist rebels belonged to the NPA Front Committee 74 led by Jojo Bulahing, also known as Kumander Bunso.
Raotraot said a military operation ensued in the aftermath of the ambush.
