Ombudsman Gutierrez resigns, DILG exec confirms

MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE) Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez has resigned, according to sources at the Office of Political Affairs in Malacañang and which Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo confirmed.

The sources, who requested anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to media, said Gutierrez submitted her resignation letter to President Benigno Aquino III at about 10 a.m. Friday.

The same sources said Gutierrez’s resignation is effective May 6.

Robredo confirmed Gutierrez’s resignation to the Philippine Daily Inquirer in a text message, which said, “Gutierrez went to President Aquino at his office this morning and personally submitted her resignation, which the President accepted.”

“She’s on her way now to formally inform her staff and then announce it to the media. Thereafter, the President will make a statement,” he added.

Another member of the Cabinet sent a similar text to the Inquirer but asked not to be identified.

Gutierrez is facing impeachment charges for, among others, alleged neglect of duty in failing to act on the criminal and administrative cases filed primarily against former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and husband, Jose Miguel.

Gutierrez will hold a press conference later on Friday and speculation is rife that she will announce her resignation.

Mr. Aquino is also expected to announce Gutierrez’s resignation.
