WHY is the ML Quezon Street being closed by the Cebu Ports Authority (CPA) and who has the last say about it?
Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama earlier ordered the removal of the CPA fence in the area which prevents the space from being used as a parking extension for visitors to City Hall and the use of a basketball court behind the senior citizens park.
The closure also cut off vehicle access to the nearby P. Burgos and D. Jakosalem Streets.
The Coastline Management Board (CMB) passed a resolution ordering the City Planning and Development Office to verify with the with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on the ownership of the road.
It also asked the City Legal Office to seek legal action to keep the road open to the public
M.L.Quezon Avenue is a parallel road of M. C. Briones Street in front of City Hall.
It connects to a portion of the Cebu South Coastal Road viaduct which is no longer passable after CPA closed the road. The CPA also fenced the vicinity of the old Compania Maritima building which faces the sea. The CPA board has yet to meet to respond to the mayor’s order. Chief of Reporters Doris C. Bongcac
