Fiba-Asia draw on

THE Gilas Pilipinas’ bid for a berth in the World Championships in Spain next year kick off today as the 16-team draw for the groupings of the Fiba-Asia Men’s Championship commences over at the Manila Hotel.

Being the hosts of this tournament has given the country the privilege of being able to pick 13th in the draw, thus allowing them to see the placements of the other teams before making their own choice as to where to position themselves.

This is a vital part of the Gilas’ bid as group placements can make all the difference.

Back in 2007, the Nationals had the misfortune of being picked to join the so-called “Group of Death” which had them grouped together with Asian powerhouses China, Jordan and Iran. They eventually finished in ninth place in that competition.

The 2011 version of the tournament proved friendlier for the Gilas as it paved the way for them to reach the semifinals and a fourth-place finish.

Presiding over the event today will be Fiba-Asia secretary general, Hagop Khakirian of Lebanon. Also expected to be present are Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Manny V. Pangilinan, chairman Oscar Morena, vice chairman Ricky Vargas and executive director Sonny Barrios.

The Gilas are currently in Lithuania for a grueling two-week training camp that will see them take on squads from the country’s local basketball league. Their first assignment today will be Klapeidos Neptunas.
