MANILA, Philippines—A graduating student in a public high school in Taguig City who skipped the first day of school was stabbed to death allegedly by a member of a gang he encountered by chance in the street.

Danrev Escaro, 16, a resident of Central Signal Village and a senior at Signal Village National High School, died from a stab wound in the neck after the attack early Monday night.

Taguig police chief Senior Supt. Arthur Felix Asis said the victim was buying cigarettes at a store on Magsaysay Street, South Signal, around 6:45 p.m., when he ran into trouble with five young men.

It was not immediately clear what triggered the attack.

The gang member who allegedly stabbed Escaro was later identified by the police as Albert Diaz, 19, alias “Kalawit,” of Purok 2, New Lower Bicutan also in Taguig. Another suspect was identified as Keano Torres of Central Signal, Basilio said.

City Department of Education administrator George Tizon, quoting the Signal Village high school principal, said Escaro did not attend the first day of school and apparently decided to hang out with his friends instead in the barangay.
