Fire closes Hilfiger factory

CLARK FREEPORT—A Hong Kong-based company manufacturing designer clothes stopped production after a fire gutted its factory here on Friday.

Franco Madlangbayan, vice president of Clark Development Corp., confirmed that work at Smart Shirts Phils. Inc. has been stopped starting Saturday, affecting 2,000 employees.

The factory churns out Tommy Hilfiger shirts and clothes.

The fire broke out at past 10 p.m. in a building section which stored finished goods, Madlangbayan said in a telephone interview.

He said firefighters began mopping up the 16,000-square-meter facility at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday after fire-retardant foam from Clark International Airport Corp. tamed the flames.
