Maid gives birth prematurely on first day at work

MANILA, Philippines—A woman gave birth prematurely to a girl early Saturday morning, just several hours after reporting for work as help at a Quezon City household Friday night, police said.

It was not clear, however, if Georgilin Lourencio’s child was stillborn or died right after birth in one of the bathrooms at her employer’s home at the Roseville Townhouse on Samar Avenue in Barangay South Triangle.

Lourencio, 21, was still confined at the East Avenue Medical Center after prematurely giving birth at around 6 a.m. Saturday.

Case investigator SPO1 Randy Bantillo said Lourencio, a single mother, arrived at the household on Friday night to start work as househelp. Household members claimed they did not know the woman was pregnant until Saturday morning.

A fellow maid, Rose Montanez, 30, said Lourencio was complained of stomach pains Saturday morning and went to the bathroom ostensibly to urinate. The woman was heard crying for help shortly afterward.

Montanez rushed to the bathroom to find the baby girl dead on the floor.

Bantillo said the baby was believed to be just eight months old when she popped out.
