‘Buhay Boksingero’ champ gets crack at WBO interim belt
UP and coming prospect Joebert Alvarez, who ruled the light flyweight category of GMA TV’s boxing reality series and tournament Buhay Boksingero two years ago, will face the biggest challenge of his three-year boxing career when he battles former WBO minimumweight world champion Moises Fuentes of Mexico for the interim WBO light flyweight world title this August.
In an article posted in philboxing.com, Alvarez’s US manager Vinny Scolpino said that the fight will take place on August 9 but reports coming out of Mexico stated that the fight will be on August 10 in Mexico City.
Fuentes (16W-1L-1D, 8KOs) fought WBO light flyweight champion Donnie Nietes here in Cebu and the fight ended in a majority draw. Fuentes wants a rematch with Nietes but he will have to beat Alvarez to get his chance.
Alvarez (12W-0L-1D, 5KOs) holds the interim WBO Asia-Pacific light flyweight title and is ranked number six by the WBO.
Fuentes remains the number one contender for Nietes’ world title. /Correspondent Rene Bonsubre Jr
