BANISILAN, North Cotabato – A candidate for municipal councilor was shot dead by unidentified men here on Sunday night, the police said.

Superintendent Danilo Peralta, the provincial police chief, said victim Gapur Omar was running under the United Nationalist Alliance party.

An initial investigation showed Omar was on his way home alone when waylaid by gunmen.

The victim succumbed to two gunshot wounds in the head, the police said. The caliber of the firearm has yet to be determined.

“This is probably an election related incident considering that the crime took place few minutes after a campaign rally,” Peralta said, adding that police will also consider other possible motives, including “rido” or family feud.
