Gunman kills local official, self in Germany
BERLIN—Police say a gunman shot and killed a local official in the northwestern town of Hamelin before turning the weapon upon himself.
Hamelin police spokesman Heinz Mikus told The Associated Press the shooting occurred inside the town’s administrative offices Friday morning.
Mikus says the identity of the gunman is not yet known and that further details on the incident were not immediately available.
Hamelin is best known internationally for the Middle Ages legend of the Pied Piper who lured away the town’s children after the citizens refused to pay him for ridding the town of rats.
