Dutchman jailed in Bali for child sex abuse
DENPASAR, Indonesia—A Dutchman was jailed for three years on Tuesday on the Indonesian resort island of Bali for sexually abusing four girls.
Jan Jacobus Vogel, 55, was found guilty at Singaraja district court of groping the girls, aged nine to 12, and giving them small gifts or payments in return.
“The defendant’s crime has traumatized the victims,” judge Sri Haryani said. The sentence was lower than the four years requested by prosecutors for the Dutchman, who has lived on Bali for around eight years.
Vogel’s lawyer Geoffrey Nanulaitta said he would appeal, and that the families of the victims had revoked their statements.
Local children and women rights group, Ni Luh Anggreni, said the sentence was disappointing.
