IN officially passing the torch to his 27-year-old grandson Samsam, outgoing Rep. Eduardo Gullas said he’s banking on him to finish the projects he started in Cebu’s 1st district.
During yesterday’s proclamation rally in Naga City, the congressman cited the P1.2 billion road road widening project from Naga City to Carcar City which he said he will help Samsam secure more funding for once he’s elected in Congress.
Rep. Gullas, who’s running for mayor in Talisay City, secured more than P400 million in pork barrel funds from Rep. Tomas Osmeña of Cebu City’s south district for the road widening project.
The road-widening project has experienced some delays due to concerns over the century-old trees that dot the area from Carcar City to Naga City.
The pork barrel funds were allocated by Osmeña who said it was his way of thanking first district voters for their support to Liberal Party-Cebu gubernatorial candidate Hilario Davide III in the 2010 elections.
Osmeña said the pork barrel funds he turned over to Gullas would also show first district voters that he can get more for them if they vote for Davide anew this year.
Davide is running anew for governor, this time against Rep. Pablo John Garcia of Cebu’s 3rd district.
Pablo John’s sister, suspended Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, will run for his seat in next month’s elections.
Pablo John, who was endorsed by Gullas’s Alayon Party as their gubernatorial candidate, attended the party’s proclamation rally held at the Naga City Plaza yesterday afternoon.
Pablo John, the One Cebu gubernatorial candidate, cited his track record of service in his district to show his supposed edge over his rival Davide.
“Kapila gitay-og apan wa magpatandog… Nagpabiling mga matinud-anong higala (I’ve been criticized so many times but I remain steadfast…You’ve also remained true friends),” he said in his short message.
Cebu’s 1st district has a voting population of close to 300,000 and consists of Talisay City, Minglanilla town, Naga City, San Fernando, Carcar City and Sibonga town.
Team PNoy and Nacionalista Party senatorial candidate Cynthia Villar also paid courtesy to Rep. Gullas, whom she considered a close family friend and ally.
“We love this district because we are welcome here. There are many Camella Homes units in the first district,” Villar said referring to the housing units built by her husband Sen. Manny Villar’s company in Talisay City and Carcar City. Chief of Reporters Doris C. Bongcac and Correspondent Carmel Loise Matus
