MANILA, Philippines—The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is planning to ban motorcades along 18 major thoroughfares of Metro Manila, Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. said Friday.
“We are not prohibiting motorcades or any kind of election campaigning, but we are regulating it in the sense that it cannot be [conducted] here and [during a certain] time,” Brillantes told reporters during the Comelec’s inspection of their PCOS assembly facility in Cabuyao, Laguna.
He said that they are set to come out with a resolution on it with the help of Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Francis Tolentino.
Under the draft resolution, motorcades will be totally prohibited on Edsa, South Super Highway, Taft Avenue, Avenida, Rizal Ave., C5 Ave., among others.
“They are allowed in all minor streets, but they are totally banned in major thoroughfares,” Brillantes said.
The draft resolution will also cover a few issues about campaign rallies but Brillantes said that they “are not much of a problem because it is only in one location and subject to the permission of local government.”
