Wife beater killed in argument over P10

MANILA, Philippines—A pregnant woman was jailed Tuesday after her common-law husband bled to death on the way to a hospital after she stabbed him on the thigh during a fight that started with an argument over P10, police said Wednesday.

Police Officer 1 Anthony Boncan of the Manila Police District’s homicide section said Nel Jessa Nivera, 20, of Internal Street, Quiapo, Manila, surrendered to the authorities after stabbing her live-in partner Leopoldo Tioson at around 10:30 in the morning on Tuesday.

He said that according to the statement of Nivera, who is five months pregnant, she and Tioson had a heated argument after she failed to give him P10. She said the man  was wont to physically abusing her whenever they quarrelled even over petty things.

According to Nivera, her husband assaulted her when she did not give him the money.

“The wife said she had no money because she had spent it on food for their children,” Boncan said. “This led to a heated argument between the two and got to a point when the man beat the woman, who then saw a knife and stabbed him on the thigh.”

Boncan said Tioson managed to get out of the house  and was taken by neighbors to the Mary Chiles Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Tioson apparently had bled to death as one of the neighbors pulled out the knife from Tioson’s thigh, causing blood to gush from the wound as they waited for a tricycle to take them to the hospital, Boncan said.

He said couple have two children aged two and three years old.
