Cops on alert as Metro Manila observes Holy Week

/ 05:35 PM April 21, 2011

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine National Police National Capital Region has deployed additional policemen to churches and other areas in Metro Manila where large crowds gather for religious rites as the largely Catholic Philippines observes the Holy Week.

At the same time, NCRPO spokesman Dionardo Carlos said police were monitoring movements of crime groups, like the acetylene  gang, which take advantage of the Lenten holiday to pull off heists.

On Good Friday, the NCRPO will downsize its deployed forces in transport terminals as police forces shift to patrolling villages in the metropolis, Carlos said.

Meanwhile, PNP chief Director General Nicanor Bartolome ordered 22 senior police officers to inspect police deployment in Metro Manila until the end of Oplan Semana Santa.
