5 people hurt in Edsa collision of cars; suspect in crash escapes

MANILA, Philippines—Five people were injured early Sunday morning after the two cars they were in collided along Edsa in Mandaluyong City.

A woman, whose identity was withheld by the Mandaluyong Police upon her request, sustained head injuries, while four others, including the driver suspected to have triggered the crash escaped, suffered minor injuries.

According to the initial investigation by the Mandaluyong Police, the accident happened at around 2:30 a.m. on the northbound stretch of Edsa near Pioneer Street.

The first victim, who was driving a Honda City car (ZGH 678), was on her way home to Quezon City, when her vehicle was bumped from behind by the Mitsubishi car being driven at high speed by Abner Rintoria, a resident of Barangay (village) Ugong, Valenzuela City.

As a result of the collision, the rear of the victim’s car was totally damaged. She also sustained head injuries after her head bumped into the car’s steering wheel. She was rushed to the Medical City for treatment.

Meanwhile, Rintoria, who reportedly admitted that he was drunk when the crash happened, was also brought to the hospital for treatment, but escaped after receiving treatment while the investigators were away.

He, along with his passengers Catherine Balabad, Jane Restoria, and Rosemari Dumag, sustained only minor injuries.

The police are now hunting for Rintoria, who will face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in physical injuries and damage to property.
