SHS-AdC bags Boys 17 title in Aboitiz football

THE Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) is proving to be a force to be reckoned with in football after it defeated Don Bosco anew, this time for the Boys 17 title of the 15th Aboitiz Football Cup yesterday at the Aboitiz Sports Field in Subangdaku, Mandaue City.

Miguel Kwan converted a penalty 30 minutes into the match and allowed the Magis Eagles to become the champions in the category with a 1-0 victory.

Four of the Magis Eagles were also given special awards with Kyle Adalim named best goalkeeper, Paulo Lopez as best defender, Kwan as best halfback and Miguel Villamor as the most valuable player.

Don Bosco, however, got the golden boot award with Yves Caballero topping the number of goals scored at 10.

The Magis Eagles failed to make it a double celebration after its girls team bowed to University of San Carlos (USC).

The lady Warriors came out with a 4-0 thrashing of SHS-AdC to clinch the Girls 17 title anchored on the hattrick of Mailyn Lozano. The other goal of USC was scored by Jesusseane Gerobiesse.

The special awards in the category all went to USC booters with Sandy Miyagi named as best goalkeeper, Gayle Colina as best defender, Elisa Juezon as best halfback, Lozano as the MVP and Janice Paglinawan as the golden boot awardee with eight goals in the whole tournament.

Don Bosco still finished with two titles out of five that they had a chance of getting.

Don Bosco-3 retained its title in the Players 8 with a 3-0 routing of Bright Academy while Don Bosco-1 also defended its title in the Players 10 with a 3-2 edging of Canduman.

Joining SHS-AdC in frustrating what would have been five titles for Don Bosco were Giuseppe FC and Springdale A.

Joshua Shields found the back of the net twice in the first half for Giuseppe FC in the Boys 12 battle. Piere Obispo put Don Bosco-1 one goal short at the 53rd minute but it eventually became the team’s lone goal as it yielded the title to Giuseppe, which was sponsored by Gerry’s Grill.

In the Boys 14, Springdale-A edged Don Bosco-2, 3-2. Ryan Haosen surprised Don Bosco-2 with his goal just three minutes into the match. Sabin Veloso made it two for Springdale before Don Bosco answered with a goal of its own in the 46th minute courtesy of Little Azkals member Moiselle Angelo Alforque.

Agustin Roa scored the equalizer for Don Bosco-2 in the 55th minute but Lorenzo Ceniza slotted in the winning goal for Springdale in the 72nd minute.

The 15th Aboitiz Cup will end today with the championship matches between University of Southern Philippines Foundation against USC for the Under-23 title; ERCO FC versus Hiroshi FC for the 38-Above title and Hiroshi FC against Cebu Queen City United for the coveted Men’s Open title.
