A SPECIAL screening of Joel Lamangan’s independent film on media killings and warlordism in the Philippines was sponsored by the Department of Anthropology, Sociology and History of the University of San Carlos (USC).
The film titled “Deadline (The Reign of Impunity)” was shown last July 29 to July 31 at the Buttenbruch Hall at USC main campus and at the College of Architecture and Fine Arts Theater at the Talamban campus.
The movie was witnessed by students from USC, University of Cebu, St. Theresa’s College and University of the Philippines Cebu and film scriptwriter Bonifacio Ilagan.
“This is the very first screening of the movie outside Metro Manila,” Ilagan said, adding the movie was inspired by the Maguindanao massacre.
Rico Barrera, Pinoy Big Brother Season 1 housemate who starred as a journalist, said it was good to experience acting in an independent film for it was different from the usual movie. “The movie gives people an idea of what’s really happening in our country rather than give entertainment,” he said.
“It is overwhelming to know that there are still people who are willing to risk their lives for our country nowadays,” said another viewer Mary Joyce Velos, a second year BS Biology student from UP Cebu.
Zona Amper, faculty member of the Sociology and Anthropology section of USC, said the issues tackled in the movie are relevant (i.e., social issues regarding human rights, media killings and warlordism) and give the students a grasp of reality. UP Cebu Masscom student Lia Bermudo
