‘BOTO nAMEN’: Demystifying the Catholic Vote
MANILA, Philippines – With the 2013 elections only a few months away, a new issue comes into view – the possible occurrence of a “Catholic Vote”.
There have been varied opinions on whether the Filipino Catholics will vote as one block this coming election.
Some say that the Catholic Church does not impose on who should be voted but it only gives guidelines to educate its members on whom to vote.
Others believe that the Catholic leaders and groups may initiate the Catholic block voting by creating a list of candidates to vote and not to vote for, while some argue that a Catholic vote is not possible at all.
Due to the presence of the controversial issues such as the RH Bill and the Sin Tax law, questions and uncertainties arise on the issue of the Catholic vote.
In light of this, the University of the Philippines Diliman Communication Research 165 WWX class will hold a paper presentation entitled “BOTO nAMEN: Demystifying the Catholic Vote” on March 18 from 9 am to 12 noon at the College of Mass Communication Media Center TV Studio.
The research seeks to understand the issue of the Catholic vote from the perception of both the Filipino Catholics and non-Catholics.
It also explores the various factors influencing how and why the Filipino Catholics vote.
Through this research, the presentation hopes to make sense of the current setting and make-up of Philippine elections.
