Bohol hosts opening leg of Triathlon Team C’ship

THE three-leg Triathlon Team Championship Series will be held for the first time in three areas in the Visayas starting Oct. 30 in Bohol.

This 3-leg triathlon series is organized by Sugbu Triathlon. It aims to gather the country’s best triathletes in one event and generate more support for the sport.

Supporting Sugbu Triathlon in this endeavor are Summit Mineral Water and Concepto Primero as well as the local governments of venues chosen for each leg.

The 1st leg will be held in Dauis, Bohol on Oct. 30, 2nd leg in Negros Oriental on Nov. 27 and the 3rd and final leg will be in Borbon, Cebu on Jan. 29, 2012 .

The event will be a team contest with each team composed of four members. Team composition could be all-male, all-female or mixed.

Teams will negotiate the standard Olympic distance of 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-km bike and 10-km run. A point system will determine the championship.

Each member of the team will be given points according to their rankings in crossing the finish line. The points of each member will be accumulated and will make up the team points.

Each team’s points will also be accumulated from all three legs and the team with the most number of points will be declared champion.

According to coach Benjoe Gimenez of Sugbu Triathlon, it is not mandatory for the teams to take part in all legs. But the chances of becoming the overall champion will be greater for a team if it competes in all legs.

A one-time registration fee per team is pegged at P2,000. The team fee will be on top of the individual registration fee, which is still being decided by the organizers. Gimenez said this is because they plan to include the accommodation with the registration fee.

Interested participants could register online at www.sugbutriathlon.com. Only online registration will be accepted.

Gimenez also explained that a triathlete could only qualify to be part of a team if he/she first registers as an individual entry. Teams could also pre-register as many members as long as only four will play during the contest itself.

A triathlete not registered during the 1st leg will not be able to take part in the succeeding legs.
