POLITICS EYED IN TOLEDO KILLING
FORMER senator John Henry “Sonny” Osmeña asked the police to thoroughly investigate the killing of his bodyguard in Toledo City, southwest Cebu.
Osmeña, a mayoral candidate for Toledo in the May election, provided information which suggests that the killing of Rene Embranilag was politically motivated, Chief Supt. Marcelo Garbo, director of the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO-7), said.
Garbo said Osmeña visited him last week to discuss the case.
Embralinag, 42, was shot dead while driving home last week in barangay Luray 2, Toledo.
Garbo said Osmeña had possible suspects whose identities matched with the persons that the police are monitoring.
Article continues after this advertisementBased on the way the crime was carried out, the two motorcycle-riding assailants were guns-for-hire.
Article continues after this advertisementAside from politics, Garbo said investigators are pursuing other possible motives.
Police said Embranilag was an informant of the police and the military and had reported to authorities about the presence of of marijuana plantations in Todelo city and Balamban town.
The victim had a pending criminal case and was out on bail when he was killed.
Police are also eyeing a labor dispute as a possible motive since Embranilag was connected with a labor union in Carmen Copper Corp./CORRESPONDENT CHITO O. ARAGON
FARMER NABBED FOR HACKING MAN
A 54-YEAR-OLD farmer hacked dead an unidentified man who allegedly broke into his house in barangay Tisa, Cebu City .
Police arrested Fortunato Saladaga after the incident.
Police said a barefoot man in his 40s barged into the farmer’s house on Monday night and asked for a glass of water.
When the farmer asked the stranger to get out, the man grabbed a scythe near the door and the two men grappled for the bladed weapon.
The farmer said he overpowered the stranger and hacked him several times.
Barangay tanods arrested the farmer and turned him over to the police./Correspondent Tweeny M. Malinao
RESORT MANAGER LOSES CASH, PHONE
A HUNGARIAN a manager of Blue Orchid Resort in barangay Saavedra, Moalboal town, southwest Cebu said she lost P40,000 cash to an unidentified thief.
Judit Szmodics, 26, said she was entertaining a guest on Monday morning when she discovered that her money and cellphone were missing.
Szmodics reported the incident to the town’s police station./CORRESPONDENT GABRIEL C. BONJOC
