The Alaska Aces kept their unbeaten record intact by pulling off a convincing 84-69 win over the Barangay Ginebra Kings last night in an out-of-town game of the 38th PBA Commissioner’s Cup in Tubod, Lanao del Norte.

The Aces, the only unbeaten team left in the tournament, tightened their hold of the top spot with a clean 4-0 (win-loss) card. The Kings, meanwhile, remained winless in four starts.

Alaska’s agile big man Sonny Thoss bagged the Best Player of the Game award by collecting 16 points and five rebounds. Thoss went seven-for-eight from the field.

The Kings further sank to the bottom of the standings despite bringing in a new import in Vernon Macklin.

Meanwhile, the finalists in last year’s Commissioner’s Cup figure in a grudge rematch as the defending champions San Mig Coffee Mixers tangle with the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters in the main game today at the Araneta Coliseum.

The two teams fought toe-to-toe in their championship showdown that went the full route before the Coffee Mixers (then B-Meg Llamados)  prevailed, 4-3.

But this conference, the two teams are poles apart with San Mig still winless after three games.

Denzel Bowles, the import that led San Mig to that championship finish, has returned but the Coffee Mixers still couldn’t stop the bleeding with him around, losing badly to the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 65-93, in his first game last Friday night.

Bowles, who replaced Matt Rogers, finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds in the blowout defeat. Before that loss, San Mig also lost badly to Petron Balze, 98-73.

Talk ‘N Text started the tournament with a 92-99 loss against Meralco bounced back and chalked up two straight victories.
