MANILA, Philippines–Commission on Elections Chair Sixto Brillantes Jr. on Thursday expressed his concern over the series of high-profile crimes in Metro Manila despite the election gun ban and police check points.
Brillantes said he would meet with Philippine National Police officials to determine if the crime situation had worsened after the election period started on January 13.
“(A) growing crime rate is the worry of everybody, election period or not. We plan to talk with the PNP to get the statistics before the start of campaign period so that we (could determine) if the checkpoints and gun ban had any effect.
Brillantes said he would talk with PNP chief Alan Purisima on Saturday to find out about the crime situation in the country.
