February to bring warmer days—Pagasa

MANILA, Philippines—The onset of February will be marked by slightly warmer weather than in recent weeks due to a high pressure area observed over Japan, the state weather bureau said on Wednesday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the next few days would bring more of the same fair weather with brief light rains over Luzon and cloudy skies with light to moderate rain showers over most of the Visayas and Mindanao.

Pagasa forecaster Alvin Pura said it was quite likely that temperatures in Luzon would no longer be as cool as in the past few weeks due to easterly winds spawned by a high pressure area blowing from Japan.

“The weather will remain fair in Luzon with brief light rains. But we expect that it will be warmer than January, in the range of 20-22 degrees Celsius,” he said.

Metro Manila recorded its lowest temperature of the year at 18.1 degrees Celsius on January 23 at Pagasa’s Science Garden in Quezon City, while Baguio City experienced its coldest day of 2013 a week before, at 9.5 degrees Celsius.

The northeast monsoon continues to affect Luzon, while the tail-end of a cold front still prevails over Eastern Visayas, Pagasa said in a bulletin.

In its extended weather outlook, the weather bureau said Eastern and Central Visayas, and Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate  rain showers or thunderstorms.

Cagayan Valley and the provinces of Aurora and Quezon, on the other hand, will have cloudy skies with occasional light rains, it said.

As for Metro Manila and the rest of the country, the skies will be partly cloudy with isolated  brief light rains, Pagasa said.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over Luzon and its coastal waters will be moderate to rough. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate, coming from the east to  northeast with slight to moderate seas, it said.
