Bullos to face Morekawa in URCC card on Jan. 19

Cebu’s most celebrated mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Cary “The Prince” Bullos will be looking to bring more pride to the city as he headlines the Universal Reality Combat Championship Cebu card entitled “Survival” on Jan. 19 at the J Centre Mall in Mandaue City.

After a year-long break from fighting, the reigning URCC Visayas bantamweight champion of SelDef MMA will take to the ring again as he battles dangerous Japanese fighter Hideo “Death From Tokyo” Morekawa of Zendokai Philippines.

In spite of the lengthy absence from in-ring fighting, Bullos assured his fans that he has kept himself in tip-top shape via a rigorous training program that started some five months ago.

And when pressed to predict what the outcome will be when he fights Morekawa, the confident fighter smiled coyly and said, “Secret. It really depends on what the situation will present.”

Morekawa, in spite losing his last two fights—his most recent one last month at the 10-year anniversary fight card of the URCC to Reysaldo Transmonte via decision—is not to be trifled with as URCC Cebu promoter Renault Lao described the former as an “Energizer rabbit, who just doesn’t stop fighting.”

This year’s fight card noticeably lacks the star power that last year had in bringing in the country’s most popular MMA fighter Eduard “The Landslide” Folayang. This was no coincidence as Lao leaned more towards highlighting local MMA fighters in the hope of giving them a shot at the big time.

“We just want to highlight on local fighters. Last year, we had (Eduard) Folayang to spurn interest in the sport. Now, we want to feature the local fighters better and hopefully, the Cebuanos will do well and in the future, be featured in fight cards in Manila and beyond,” added Lao during the press conference yesterday at the Loft.

The other matches in this eight-fight MMA extravaganza will feature two undefeated Cebuano fighters in Jimmy “The Silencer” Yabo and Vaughn Donaire. Yabo will be facing off against Lord Rey Yammit while Donaire takes on Allan Attup in a match that the brawny fighter predicts will end with a “submission in the first round.”
