Car crash kills 3

Three persons died while three others were hurt when their car hit a stalled truck along the highway in Barangay (village)Bantug Curva here early on Sunday, police said.

Reports said Ryan dela Vega, 23, the driver of the Mitsubishi Galant, and one of his passengers, Freska Castro, a sophomore student of Central Luzon State University here, died instantly from the collision at 1 a.m. on Sunday, while Mary Rose dela Vega, 23, died in a hospital in Cabanatuan City.

Their three companions—Rowena dela Vega, Analyn Valdez and another identified only as “Hazel”—were hurt and taken to a hospital in Cabanatuan. A police report said the victims, who came from San Jose City and were on their way home to Talavera town, hit an early warning device before slamming into the rear of the truck loaded with palay.  Anselmo Roque, Inquirer Central Luzon

Man in motorcycle
dies avoiding cow

A man died after he was thrown off his motorcycle while trying to avoid a cow in the middle of a road in Barangay San Roque in Mercedes, Camarines Norte, shortly before midnight on Wednesday, police said on Thursday.

Chief Insp. Allan Docyogen, Mercedes chief of police, said Mark Anthony Palero, 25, was speeding and failed to anticipate the cow that was crossing the road around 11 p.m. on Wednesday. Senior Supt. Jose Capinpin, provincial police chief, said Palero suffered multiple injuries and died while undergoing treatment at Sto. Niño Hospital in Daet.

Docyogen said the owner of the cow could be held liable for the accident. He said, however, that police could not find any witness because the incident happened around midnight. Jonas Cabiles Soltes, Inquirer Southern Luzon

Bomb defused
outside cop station

Authorities recovered an improvised explosive device placed beside the rear gate of the police station here on Sunday morning.

Members of the Philippine Army’s Explosive and Ordinance Disposal  unit defused EIDs fashioned from two 60-millimeter mortars attached to a 9-volt battery and a mobile phone, which served as its triggering mechanism.
