TWO fishermen were detained at the Lapu-Lapu City police headquarters after they were caught for illegal fishing within the seawaters of Caubian Island last Thursday morning.
Ondoy Almohalas, 63 of barangay Sillon, Bantayan Island, Cebu and Martin Amoren, 39 of sitio Calipay, barangay Tingo, Olango Island, Lapu-Lapu City were caught fishing with the use of compressor or hookah fishing.
Hookah fishing is prohibited under the Lapu-Lapu City Ordinance 312-A-2006.
Confiscated were their pumpboat, one compressor machine, one compressor tank, 20 meter hose, swimming fins and four kilos of fish.
The Task Force Kalikasan (TFK) and the Tourist Police Unit of Lapu-Lapu City were conducting a seaborne patrol within the seawaters of barangay Caubian when the two men engaged in hookah fishing.
The suspect admitted they knew it is prohibited but said the are doing it for food consumption.
“Lisud naman gud kaayo ang pagpangisda kay daghan pa man ang mogamit og dinamita.” (It’s hard to get fish now as there are still illegal fishers using dynamite for fishing) Almohalas said.
