Deped to buy tents to serve as classrooms in typhoon-ravaged areas
MANILA, Philippines—The Department of Education will make an emergency purchase of 200 tents worth almost P80,000 each to serve as temporary classrooms in Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley where hundreds of classrooms were washed out or damaged by Typhoon “Pablo” earlier this month.
The DepEd announced on its website on Friday that it will accept bids for 200 tents under a negotiated procurement mode, citing the emergency situation.
The DepEd has approved a budget for the contract worth P15,830,696, meaning the bid for each tent must not exceed P79,153.48.
The tents will go to Region XI (Southern Mindanao), which bore the brunt of the destruction.
In Davao Oriental, 769 classrooms needed to be replaced while 307 others needed major repairs, according to the DepEd regional office.
In Compostela Valley, 96 classrooms needed rehabilitation, 300 needed new roofs while 144 others needed major repairs.
DepEd has invited suppliers to quote their lowest price inclusive of value added tax and to submit these to the DepEd Procurement Service at its main office in Pasig City not later than Dec. 28, 2012.
“The supplier who submits the lowest calculated and responsive quotation shall be awarded the purchase order after evaluation by the (Bids and Awards Committe),” the DepEd said.
The winning bidder is given 45 days upon receipt of the purchase order to deliver the tents to the DepEd Region XI office.
The supplier will be paid in full upon delivery, according to DepEd.
The DepEd said classes in typhoon-devastated areas will resume in January, even as thousands of teachers and students will hold classes in tents for the rest of the school year while waiting for the construction of new classrooms.
The DepEd has also launched a donation drive for school supplies to some 50,000 affected public school students.
