MANILA, Philippines—Newly appointed Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle on Sunday ushered in the start of the dawn masses or “Simbang Gabi” and called on the people to remember Jesus Christ as the reason for the celebrations.

He said that people’s minds are usually on many other things during the Christmas season such as their salary bonus, vacation and shopping.

But Tagle said in his homily at the San Fernando De Dilao Parish that “the true reason why we should be joyful is because Jesus is with us.”

“God knows our suffering and our confusion, that is why He gave His son Jesus to bring peace to our hearts,” he said.

“He will give people deep joy and happiness that cannot be brought by the material world,” he added.

Tagle reminded people that they also have a responsibility to help others who are in need.

“Give clothes to those without, give food to those who are hungry, and give happiness,” he said.

During this Christmas season he also urged people to be honest and to give instead of receiving.

He cited as an example the children who come to visit their relatives only to ask for gifts.

“Don’t ask for more than what is appropriate … True joy is in being honest and not taking advantage [of others],” Tagle said.

The mass was covered live by INQUIRER.net through livestream. All subsequent dawn masses will also be streamed live.
