1 soldier killed, 2 hurt in Basilan roadside bombing
MANILA, Philippines—A soldier was killed and two were hurt in a roadside bombing incident in Basilan Monday morning, the military said.
Soldiers from the Army’s 3rd Scout Ranger Company were on security patrol when an improvised bomb exploded along the circumferential road in Cabangalan village in Ungkaya Pukan, Basilan, Captain Alberto Caber told reporters Tuesday.
Corporal Mark Dandin Gomez died, while the casualties were given immediate first aid and were brought to Camp Navarro General Hospital in Zamboanga City.
Initial investigation at the blast side revealed the said the bomb was cell-phone detonated. Troops recovered the fragments of mortar round and cell-phone parts.
Investigation is being conducted to determine the perpetrators, Caber said.
