MANILA, Philippines—Two more partylist groups went to the Supreme Court Monday questioning the Commission on Elections’ decision disqualifying them from participating in next year’s election.
In two separate petitions, Social Movement for Active Reform and Transparency (SMART) and Alliance of Bicolnon Party (ABP-Bicolnon) asked the high court to stop the implementation of the Comelec’s order.
Both petitioners, along with Binhi-Partido ng mga Magsasaka Para Sa Mga Magsasaka (Binhi), in their petitions said the Comelec committed grave abuse of discretion when it acted without jurisdiction when it canceled their earlier registration and accreditation.
Petitioners said the Comelec’s ruling would deprive not only the petitioner but “the other marginalized groups the chance to explore all avenues possible for their betterment.”
Smart and ABP – Bicolnon, both represented by Maganduga Maganduga law office also said their right to due process have been violated by the Comelec when they were not given the opportunity to air their side before they were disqualified.
