Fiel tops Colonnade chess

YVES CHRISTIAN Fiel edged the heavily favored Allan Pason in their tie-break match up in yesterday’s Colonnade Mall Youth Open Chess Tournament held at the second level of the Colonnade Mall in Colon Street, Cebu City.

Lapu-Lapu’s Pason, who topped the Guinness Book of World Record’s biggest chess tournament in Cebu earlier this year, bowed to the University of San Jose Recoletos ace  wood pusher Fiel after seven rounds of competition.

Both had 6.0 points before their tie-break encounter.

Pason placed second while Felix Shaun Balbona settled for third spot with 5.5 points.

FEATURED STORIES

In the 14-under division, Balbona’s younger brother, John Francis, emerged victorious after finishing with 5.0 points.

Ryan Pacres placed  second with 4.5 while Laila Camel Nadera wound up third with 4.0 points.

Adrian Basilgo, meanwhile, defeated Jerish John Velarde in their tie-break duel to top the 12-under division.
