THE Cebu Contractors Association Inc. has partnered with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) in assessing their employees workmanship.
The association decided to have their workers rated for Tesda certification and to keep training them to become multi-skilled.
A carpenter will also be trained for masonry, tile setting, heavy equipment operator, welding, plumbing, and electrical work.
“The trend today is to keep workers multi-skilled,” said engineer Reinero Tomas Jayme, head of Tesda ‘s assessment, certification and trainers development.
Work will go faster as the contractor can rely on workers already familiar with various types of construction work.
Tesda will teach workers the basics of each skill.
Workers at the Pedro Calungsod templete at the South Road Properties handled by the CCA are being assessed by Tesda on a regular basis.
Results of the 40 skilled workers at the templete show a national certification rate of 90 percent.
The 40 workers are being trained and assessed for different skill levels.
Tesda is also training the CCA to handle the training and assesment of their own workers.
“Soon, national certification for construction works will become a requirement for hiring workers. It’s like being a doctor; you can’t work unless you have a license,” Jayme said.
A system of assessing construction workers promotes professionalism.
A worker certified by Tesda is an assurance that he or she is capable of giving quality workmanship and is an asset to the company.
