MANILA, Philippines—Don’t be fooled by social networking sites posting earthquake updates allegedly from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
“We have no Twitter or Facebook accounts. Just wait for our announcements on our website or on radio,” said Phivolcs Seismology Division officer-in-charge Ishmael Narag in an interview Tuesday morning on 990 AM’s “In Desk Corner.”
A series of Twitter messages also Tuesday early morning allegedly from Phivolcs alarmed citizens that a 7-magnitude quake struck Zambales.
Whereas Phivolcs officially posted on its website that a 5.9-magnitude quake struck Iba town in Zambales at 1.15 a.m. Tuesday. Narag said the epicenter was at the sea, 35 km southwest of Iba.
“Though it awakened people from their sleep, there were no reported casualties or damage,” he said.
