MANILA, Philippines—A public utility driver crashed his van into a road center island in Quezon City after he suffered a heart attack while behind the wheel of his vehicle Monday morning. Edgar Magsumbol was later declared dead on arrival at Quirino Memorial Medical Center, where he was rushed by a fellow driver.
The 44-year-old victim had to be pulled out of the UV Express van, which rammed the center island of C5 Road in Libis, Quezon City. Case investigator Senior Police Officer 1 Jaime Jimena of the Quezon City Police District said the driver was on his way back to Marikina City to pick up more passengers when he apparently suffered a heart attack.
“He had just finished ferrying passengers to Ayala and was going back to get more,” the investigator said. Police learned that Magsumbol, a resident of SSS Village in Marikina City, owned the UV Express van he was driving. At 7:45 a.m., the van with license plate TWC 838 had just passed by the Eastwood police station when it veered out of control and went up the center island.
Another UV Express driver, Nicasio Liwangan, was driving in the area when he noticed the van. Curious, he went back to check and found Magsumbol already unconscious but still breathing. Liwangan pulled him out of the passenger van and rushed him to the hospital.—Julie M. Aurelio
