Norsu prof represents PH in Myanmar talks

A FACULTY member of Negros Oriental State University (Norsu) represented the Philippines during an international conference on maritime safety.

Norsu maritime instructor Ralph Cardeño was the lone representative from the Philippines during the conference in Myanmar from Oct. 1 to 4.

The conference was co-hosted by the Uniteam Marine Training Center and Myanmar Maritime University.

During the conference, Cardeño presented a paper entitled “Ensuring safety of navigation at sea: A linguistic discourse analysis,” which was co-authored by Norsu president Dr. Don Vicente Real and Professor Consolacion Unabia.

Norsu Information officer Joy Perez said Cardeño teaches English subjects and is the lone maritime English professor at the state university.

The conference gathered maritime classroom practitioners from all over the world with the aim of improving and enhancing the standards of methods in the teaching of maritime English.

The forum also provided an opportunity for the participants to present their research studies on teaching of English to cadets and seafarers and the linguistic and communication problems encountered at sea by seafarers.
