MANILA, Philippines—This man only had good intentions when he decided to help out a friend at his workplace early Monday.

Bartolome Cuazon died when his face got smashed with a heavy mace at a vulcanizing shop in Quezon City.

The case investigator, Police Officer 2 Anthony Tejerero, said the victim was working on a jeepney’s flat tire when tragedy struck.

Cuazon was visiting his friend, Moncito Costo, who owned a vulcanizing shop along Commonwealth Avenue near Don Fabian Street in Barangay (village) Commonwealth.

Costo told police that the victim decided to help him out since the shop was undermanned at the time.

After removing the flat tire, Cuazon began to pound the steel mags of the tire with a heavy mace.

But at one point, the victim missed his aim and hit the tire instead of the steel mags.

The elasticity of the rubber forced the heavy mace to bounce back, smashing his face.

Costo was able to rush his friend to the East Avenue Medical Center but Cuazon died on the way.
