MANILA, Philippines – Militants are expected to gather along Commonwealth in Quezon City Monday morning ahead of President Benigno Aquino III’s State of the Nation Address this afternoon, a leader of the group told 990AM.
Renato Reyes, secretary general of the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan, said in Flipino that there’s no stopping the protesters, to include the farmers of Hacienda Luisita who held a vigil at the nearby Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) to demand the distribution of the sugar plantation that belongs to the Cojuangcos, Aquino’s mother side of the family.
Reyes said they were also expected to attend a hearing on their petition before Branch 215 of the Quezon City regional trial court to reconsider its decision that disallowed the rallyists to go no farther than the football field at the Quezon City Hall.
Reyes said the court ruling violated the law allow that allowed rallies as long as there was a permit. He said they filed their petition for a permit last July 15 but the court order was issued July 22, a Friday, and the weekend before Aquino’s speech before Congress.
