Leonen asks Congress to issue resolution supporting peace deal
MANILA, Philippines—Marvic Leonen, the Philippine government’s chief negotiator in peace talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, on Tuesday urged the House of Representatives to issue a resolution in support of the recently signed framework agreement on the peace process in Mindanao.
He said this during a briefing with the House committees on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity; Mindanao Affairs, and Muslim Affairs, adding that the panel of negotiators were “certain that the Bangsamoro Basic Law will be (ready) in the 16th Congress.”
“We ask for the House of Representatives to issue a resolution,” said Leonen.
Asked by Deputy Speaker Lorenzo “Erin” Tañada III whether it was important that the lower chamber of the 15th Congress should be the one to issue the resolution supporting the framework of the peace process, Leonen said yes, explaining that it was because the framework was signed during its time.
“I can foresee that it can be passed before Christmas break,” said Tañada.
