After winning their first title in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. last Saturday, the Southwestern University Cobras are set on getting bigger fish to fry as they aim to claim the Southern Islands Championship in the 2012 Philippine Collegiate Champions League, which has been set on Nov. 13 to 16 at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Cobras nabbed the Cesafi title in incredible fashion last weekend, erasing an 18-point deficit in the last seven minutes of the game to nip the mighty University of the Visayas Green Lancers, 73-72.
The win assured SWU of a spot in the Southern Islands title game, where they will be taking on the winner of the game between the Visayas and Mindanao regionals champions.
The Visayas regionals will be starting this Saturday in Dumaguete City while the Mindanao leg will follow in Iligan City, according to league commissioner Joe Lipa.
According to SWU head coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba, the PCCL games that will be staged here in Cebu will feature some topnotch squads from the UAAP and NCAA with National University, Letran, La Salle and San Sebastian slated to compete here.
As for now though, Alcoseba said that their focus remains on capturing the Southern Islands title, where they expect to face UV again. UV and third placers University of San Jose-Recoletos have also booked slots to the PCCL. Correspondent Jonas Panerio
