MANILA, Philippines – Bayan Muna partylist representative Teddy Casiño filed his Certificate of Candidacy before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Wednesday morning saying he was offering himself as an “alternative senatorial candidate.”
“For so many decades, the same old political clans and vested interests have dominated the Senate. I want to break that stranglehold,” Casiño said in a statement.
“I want to bring the voice of the common person, especially the poor and marginalized who make up the majority in our country, into the halls of the Senate,” Casiño said.
He said he will push for “lower prices of basic utilities, more jobs and livelihoods as well as better government.”
Casiño will be running under the independent Makabayan Party Coalition and said that he “will be relying on nontraditional machineries and methods of campaigning.”
He came to the Comelec office in Intramuros after a “symbolic run” from San Agustin Church a few blocks away. He was met by his family, fellow partylist representatives and other supporters.
